Auction Description

Design for the Home and Garden by Andrew Jones Auctions
A year and a month have passed since our inaugural auction and in that time, we have achieved our first world record price, met new clients and welcomed old friends. We are so very grateful to be growing and holding captivating auctions. The October 2019 edition of Design for the Home and Garden features a complement of antiques and modern design, historic paintings and contemporary works, academic pieces and whimsical accents. This sale includes property from collections in New York, Utah and of course, California including property from the estate of Richard E. Faggioli and the estate of Marion Scharffenberger of Rolling Hills, the Schutzenberger Family collection in Rancho Paolos Verdes, collectors in Montecito, Century City and Palm Desert, Pasadena and a wonderful selection from the collection of Connie and Bill McNally of Rancho Santa Fe as well as property from the estate of Peter Falk and the collections of Kate Edelman Johnson and Ann Turkel and Richard Harris. One of the most striking pieces is the Giacomo Balla edition Linee di forza del pugno di Boccioni II, circa 1968, from a private collection (lot 357). The work is derived from maquettes and watercolors of the 1910s and produced as one of nine under the direction of L’Obelisco gallery in 1968. It is a three-dimensional manifestation of the dynamic symbol if the Italian Futurist movement. Other highlights of modern and contemporary design include a selection from a private Century City and Palm Desert collection such as (lot 373) the Hiroshi Yamano glass sculpture East to West Fish Catcher, No. 176, 2002 and a gorgeous Martin Blank Cranberry Lotus Flower, 2016 (lot 372). Also, from this collection is a whimsical Woods Davy stone and glass table (lot 356). Modern silver from Allan Adler, Theo Fennell, Georg Jensen, Jean Puiforcat, Tapio Wirkkala and others accent modern design. The fine art offerings range from 18th century to modern including a serene Giverny scene La Seine à Port-Villez by American expat artist Theodore Earl Butler from the Schutzenberger Family Collection (lot 109). A selection of American Impressionist works from a private Montecito collector features a number of local scenes including a Carl Oscar Borg view of Montecito looking towards the Rincon (lot 92) and two works by Lockwood de Forest, View at the Rincon, 1905 (lot 69) and Santa Barbara Mission, 1903 (lot 66). A charming piece by Helen Layfield Bradley with a very long, narrative title abridged to Alice Ann and Jim Wilson are Married...,1968 (lot 319) has a story to tell. Continental paintings are led by a pair of large capriccio scenes in the manner of Claude Lorraine (lot 217). Fine antiques and furnishings feature a sinuous George III exotic hardwood serpentine commode from the collection of an English gentleman (lot 94). An interesting group of Baltic and Swedish furniture and decorative arts encompasses a set of eight Gustavian chairs (lot 311), a pair of luminous gilt bronze and agate candelabra (lot 143) and a clear and emerald glass chandelier (lot 44). A grand Louis XVI gilt bronze cartel clock by Charles Baltazar (lot 50) and a good French gilt bronze and breccia candelabrum by Henry Dasson (lot 160) are part of a private Salt Lake City collection. A private Pasadena collector is offering two pieces by Gustav Stickley’s Craftsman Workshops, a tall chest of drawers (lot 261) and a standing lamp previously in the collection of Barbara Streisand (lot 262). Three Pacific Basin limestone covered urns, probably Mindanao, are unusual statement pieces (lots 77-79). A pair of Continental painted leather four panel screens decorated with panoramic cityscapes from the collection of Connie and Bill McNally were formerly in the private collection of Cher, previously from the estate of Marjorie Merriweather Post from Mar-a-Lago (lot 298). We hope our dedication to our clients and our passion for our work will carry us through our second year and many more to come. -Andrew Jones Read more
