Auction Description

2021 Smithsonian Craft Show - Chie Hitchner by Chie Hitchner
My shop at the Smithsonian Craft Show this year displays a number of my representative works inspired by the Japanese Kogei movement. The process of creation starts with unwashed, high quality Japanese filament silk. I dye the silk in small batches in my studio, using natural materials often foraged from plant clippings in my neighborhood. Then I set the fiber on a 4- or 6-harness floor loom and weave the work by hand. You can see me inserting supplemental weft in the following video, as well as see the colors I get from foraging for dyeable plants in my neighborhood. You will see that I rely on two techniques to achieve my design vision. One is ikat, also known as kasuri, which is the technique of dyeing individual warp or weft fibers more than one color before placing them on the loom. The other is supplemental weft, in which I insert by hand different-colored fibers into the weft during the process of weaving. Each work in my catalog is truly one-of-a-kind and was created by me with an extreme focus on both the perfection of technique and the artistry of the outcome. Read more
