Auction Description

2021 Smithsonian Craft Show - Fred's Glass by Fred's Glass
Enrolling at the University of Wisconsin River Falls as a non-traditional student after graduating from Bates College with a degree in religion, I studied glassblowing for several years until I was encouraged by my mentor to start my own studio. That was over 20 years ago, and ever since, I've been making one of kind and limited production work out of my studio in St. Paul, where I grew up. I work in a variety of styles that rely on a balance between serendipity and control. This balance can be seen in my use of silver leaf that requires me to put a glove on and pat pieces of silver onto the interior surface of the vessel. This layer of silver interacts with the base colors of the piece to create new and sometimes surprising patterns and colors. The video below is a brief overview of this process. I also play with this balance in my cane pieces that require me to delicately tumble and fuse thin glass canes into the interior of a vessel to ultimately create a glass nest that seams to float within the walls of the piece. No two can, or ever will be, the same. I'm honored to be a part of this beautiful virtual show but I look forward to rejoining everyone in person at the National Building Museum soon. I hope you enjoy my work! Read more
