Auction Description

The Art of Helping Others by Gilead House
ABOUT THE ARTIST John Klock is a physician who currently serves as founder and CEO of QT Imaging, Inc. Dr Klock was also involved in the start-up of numerous medical companies in the San Francisco Bay Area. He paints for pleasure, selling all his art to benefit Gilead House, a Marin transitional home for homeless single mothers and their children. He lives on his West Marin ranch with his winemaker wife, Cynthia. This collection of the artist’s works are West Marin landscapes, buildings, and farms that are fast disappearing from this very special area of Northern California, and so are designed to become historical records. Most of the paintings are on wood-mounted, Masonite gesso-board (except as noted). The gesso board is prepared with an acrylic outline of the feature details for emphasis and to give 3-dimensionality to each work. Oil paints are applied in multiple layers with dry pigments rubbed in then light sanding between layers to create depth and color-overlay effects. The paintings are then given a multi-coat varnish to add depth and intensify the colors. All paintings are mounted in a hand-made frame created by the artist customized to the size, depth, and color to complement that art. Most of the frames have hand-applied gold leafing for elegance and emphasis, and all of them are given multiple layers of varnish to add depth and longevity. Art unto themselves. ABOUT GILEAD HOUSE Gilead House is a place of hope to inspire and empower homeless single moms and their children toward financial stability and independence as they navigate the journey to self-reliance. Established in 1999, Gilead House provides a stable home environment for low income, vulnerable, and often homeless single mothers, and their children. Our 24-month program offers women the opportunity to learn vital skills in a supportive environment so our residents can make permanent changes in their life. The cultivation of self-esteem takes place in a home - not a shelter or institution. It is there where the transformation from homelessness to self-reliance and a future filled with promise takes place. Each resident brings about changes for herself and her family in a multi-tiered and multi-faceted infrastructure of relationships including a personal mentor, a case manager, life skills teachers, the other families, and a large base of volunteers who help create a learning and loving community. The main components of the program include a strong focus on education, family advocacy, mental health support, and mentoring and personal goal setting. Through each of these avenues, the residents learn independence and self-sufficiency and make plans for life beyond transitional housing. Read more
