Auction Description

20th Century Design by Bonhams Skinner
Our June sale offers over 500 lots for the discerning collector, dealer, or homeowner seeking furniture, artwork, and decorative objects spanning the 20th and early 21st centuries. The warmth of natural wood, pop of colorful prints and paintings, and textures of ceramic vessels and sculptures come together to brighten any room. Let us help you find something that will breathe new life into your interiors. When you collect a piece of history, the story is yours to continue. Art Nouveau lots include a spectacular Tiffany Studios favrile vase with swirled design as well as art glass from Gallé, Daum, and Lalique. The Arts and Crafts Movement is represented by a rare Roycroft sideboard purchased by the grandparents of the consignor while honeymooning in upstate New York in 1910. Hermès Art Deco sterling silver wine coolers and flower vases set in Puiforcat sterling silver bases come from the collection of a New York City gentleman. An Erik Gunnar Asplund “Senna” lounge chair illustrates the transition from Art Deco to Scandinavian Modern, and Modern and Midcentury Modern are exemplified by the designs of George Nelson, Ray and Charles Eames, Harry Bertoia, Le Corbusier, Percival Lafer, and Richard Schultz. Scandinavian Modern highlights include a rare office suite by Bodil Kjaer and the designs by Hans J. Wegner executed by Johannes Hansen. Studio furniture lots include a rare Judy McKie “Dragon Table,” a round George Nakashima coffee table and Wendel Castle’s “Starry Night Table.” We also feature the incredible marquetry work of Silas Kopf, and a four-panel folding “Peacock” screen by Virginia “Ginny” Blanchard. Not to be overlooked are a number of lots from the cabinetmakers of Thomas Moser. A Picasso Madoura “Tete de Femme Couronnee de Fleurs” ceramic pitcher leads the studio pottery lots, which also include a rare early exhibition piece by Emilio Scanavino, pieces from the final inventory of Otto Heino, and a “Cuut” vase by Claude Conover. Italian glass collectors will find works by the Murano glassmakers of Venini, Barovier & Toso, Pauly, and Seguso. In Post-Modern and Contemporary you will find a fabulous “Les Branches” mirror by Hervé van der Straeten and a bronze-base coffee table by Michel Mangematin. We are also excited to be offering a rare Vassilakis Takis “Signal” kinetic light sculpture. Artwork includes a signed color lithograph of Alexander Calder’s Horse and etchings by Picasso. We invite you to preview items, ask questions of our specialists, and learn more about the auction process at Skinner. Appointments are required to ensure safety and health. A. Conditions of Sale 1. Some of the lots in this sale are offered subject to a reserve. The reserve is a confidential minimum price agreed upon by the consignor and Skinner, Inc. below which the lot will not be sold. In most cases, the reserve will be set below the estimated range, but in no case will it exceed the estimates listed. A representative of Skinner, Inc. will execute such reserves by bidding for the consignor. In any event and whether or not a lot is subject to a reserve, the auctioneer may reject any bid or raise not commensurate with the value of such lot. 2. All property is sold “as is,” and neither the auctioneer nor any consignor makes any warranties or representation of any kind or nature with respect to the property, and in no event shall they be responsible for the correctness, nor deemed to have made any representation or warranty, of description, genuineness, authorship, attribution, provenance, period, culture, source, origin, or condition of the property and no statement made at the sale, or in the bill of sale, or invoice or elsewhere shall be deemed such a warranty of representation or an assumption of liability. 3. Except as provided in paragraph 1 above, the highest bidder as determined by the auctioneer shall be the purchaser. In the case of a disputed bid, the auctioneer shall have sole discretion in determining the purchaser and may also, at his or her election, withdraw the lot or reoffer the lot for sale. Some property that is sold at auction can be subject to laws governing export from the U.S., such as items that include material from some endangered species. Import restrictions from foreign countries are subject to these same governing laws. Granting of licensing for import or export of goods from local authorities is the sole responsibility of the buyer. Denial or delay of licensing will not constitute cancellation or delay in payment for the total purchase price of these lots. 9. Sales in Massachusetts, Florida, New York, and Maine are subject to the respective current sales taxes. Dealers, museums, and other qualifying parties may be exempt from sales tax upon submission of proper documentation. 10.
