American Folk Signage has been my focus since 1979. Home-made Signs are far more than Advertising: they are, at their best, Folk Paintings. Color, surface, graphic impact and message are primary criteria. Our time-line spans c. 1850 - c. 1950. Naiveté is a great draw: the untutored hand can produce a work of emotional immediacy that bares the Soul. Message, unfiltered by constraints of social convention or proper grammar, can achieve unadorned Truth. Puns, double-entendres and Humor (both intentional and unintended) are a perpetual delight.
Our Audience is diverse. Literary types revel in the power of the Word that these Objects reveal. Collectors of Modern Art are drawn to the bold, abstract and colorful forms and to the idea of the Word as Image. Collectors of Country find in these a window into the heart of Americana.
Life does come full circle. I left Academia as a young man in 1979, having taught Literature and Writing at the University level. In those days I taught Words on Paper, now and since I deal in Words on wooden Boards. My clients often end up becoming my 'Pupils'.
Objects of Delight should, above all else, make us Smile.
