Antique Firearms - A Brief History

Various countries have their own definitions of antique firearms. In general, it refers to a gun built before the turn of the 20th century. Guns that date back to the 1880s when they began to use smokeless powder in place of gunpowder are considered antiques. To qualify as an antique firearm in the United States, a firearm must be older than 1898. Additionally, the firearm should be loaded with cartridges, a muzzle-loading rifle, or a shotgun that uses black powder. Firearms cannot use fixed ammunition to qualify as antiques. The Springfield Armory was established in Springfield, Massachusetts in 1776, making it the oldest gun factory in the country.  It was Eli Whitney's interchangeable parts system that made mass production possible during the Industrial Revolution. Firearms during this period changed from flintlocks using flint for lighting gunpowder to percussion pistols that used the percussion cap as the ignition device.

Collectors became interested in historic firearms as certain weapons from previous conflicts, for instance, the Civil War and the Revolutionary War became increasingly rare. There is something for every collector on Auction Website, regardless of whether they wish to collect military antiques such as cartridge-firing weapons or muzzleloaders. There are many factors that contribute to the high demand for specific firearm models, including finish, rarity, and simply being unusual. Antique firearms that belonged to historical figures are the most expensive. Guns that once belonged to individuals fighting for freedom or contributing to building nations are considered more valuable.

A selection of historic and rare arms is featured in Bidsquare’s military auctions. Highlights include a Schmidt-Rubin 1896/11 straight pull rifle, French Style Double Barrel Pin-fire Pistols, European Flintlock Pistols, German M1884/98 III Bayonet with Scabbard and Frog, American Dress Sword, and more.
