This pattern was N. P. Ames first sword, based on an earlier French design. Not practical for combat, these swords were found to be most useful clearing undergrowth. This sword features a cast fish scale handle with heavy cross guard. Eagle stamped into the pommel. Inspector initials JH are stamped into the cross guard. Ricasso is stamped U.S 1844 JH(same inspector) on one side, an eagle N. P. Ames Springfield on the other side. Original scabbard and frog.
Condition
Corrosion and edge Knicks on blade. Age cracking in leather on scabbard and frog. Brass scabbard drag has MS inspector mark.
