• Lot Description
  Small molded faience figure of a recumbent hippopotamus, after the celebrated Middle Kingdom prototype, the body covered in a soft turquoise-blue siliceous glaze and incised with iron-oxide/manganese-brown line work depicting characteristic Nile aquatic vegetation — lotus blossoms, papyrus stems, and leaves — across the back and flanks; the head modeled with applied ears, almond-shaped eye, articulated mouth, and a stylized lotus rosette on the shoulder. Underside roughly finished. The type derives from a well-known group of Dynasty 11–12 (c. 2055–1650 BC) funerary figures, the most famous example being the Metropolitan Museum's "William" (acc. no. 17.9.1). Not formally authenticated; offered without warranty as to date.

  Condition

  Surface heavily worn throughout, with the buff-colored siliceous core exposed through abrasion to the glaze on the back, sides, and underside. Glaze best preserved in protected recesses, where the original turquoise color is brightest. Incised brown decoration faint but legible. Small surface losses, pitting, and earthen/calcareous accretions throughout, particularly to the underside. No legs (consistent with the type). Sold as-is.
