Carved stone sculpture by Plains Cree artist, Stewart Steinhauer, depicting a bear interlocked with a human figure. The rounded, biomorphic volumes and open-form negative space creates a continuous spiral around the central voids. The stone shows variegated green, tan, and ochre tones with a satin polish. The underside is marked ‘Stewart S.’ The sculpture is in good condition. | Please see photos for additional details.ABOUT THE ARTIST: Stewart Steinhauer (born 1953) is a Cree sculptor from the Saddle Lake Cree Nation in Alberta, known for his large-scale granite carvings that explore themes of land, spirituality, and Indigenous identity. Working primarily in locally sourced stone, he creates bears, turtles, and symbolic forms with a focus on healing and connection to the land.
