Red Tree 2016 Stoneware 22 1/2 inches long
Aneta Regel (Born 1976) began her career in Poland then moved to London to take her MFA at the Royal College of Art. She soon became a leading proponent in what is now termed “radical glazing”, an approach that is contemporary and painterly and unlike conventional glaze is no longer an applied skin but visually integrated, seeming to grow from the form itself. Her sculptures are decidedly unconventional as well somewhat alien. They appear to be many things but when coupled with what look like legs they take on a perverse zoomorphic or anthropomorphic stance. Regel explains, “The human body and objects found in nature fascinate me. My work carries anthropomorphic references and autobiographical narratives.” In addition to clay and layers of glaze, Regel also uses volcanic rock materials, basalt, granite, and feldspars to form the main body of her pieces, resulting in visually complex surfaces and textures. Regel is represented by Jason Jacques Gallery, NY.
