Flower Tree 2019 Porcelain, 6 x 7 x 6 1/2 inches Cone 10,, unglazed, colored porcelain
Matt Wedel’s (Born 1975) recent exhibition, Everything is everything, (L.A. Louver November 14, 2018 – January 5, 2019) again reinforces his importance as one of top American sculptors working in the ceramic medium. Dealing with culture in the context of nature and landscape, his newer works are an extension of exploring paint as sculpture, as well as sculptural action. As these parameters collapse, you enter his way of thinking: ‘Everything is painting, and at the same time, everything is an act of sculpting.’ His gift, Flower Tree with its carefully nuanced color, cream, grey and then jumping into brisk, bright yellow, is one of the gems of the auction. Stepping away from the notion of ceramics as a functional craft, Wedel’s art enters the realm of mythological creation stories. Intent on recreating the world from mud or clay, he intricately models vegetation, minerals, and animals—all of which, while familiar, suggest they have roots in the unknown, with commanding saturated color that has a veiled toxic edge. Wedel is represented by L.A. Louver, Venice CA.
