Profilo Continuo del Trumpolini 2017 Study #5, Ceramics, Glaze 8 1/2 x 8 x 8 inches
Richard Notkin (born 1948) has contributed a work from a new series. Entitled “Profilo Continuo del Trumpolini”, a sly dig at the current state of American politics. Politics are always at the core of Notkin’s sculptures. His Yixing stoneware teapots in the 80’s and 90’s took on issues like nuclear energy and bombs, homelessness, war, and needless imprisonment. If this work looks familiar it is because its reference point is Renato Bertelli’s masterpiece of radical modernism, “Continuous Profile of Mussolini”, 1933 in the “aeroceramica” style. Mussolini, with his taste for self-commemoration, approved it as an official portrait and it was mass produced. Look closely; this is not a 360-degree portrait of Mussolini but of someone with a similar autocratic inclination in Office. This is Notkin’s work at it’s most powerful.
