Stunting: Pump (1) 2018 Porcelain, China Paint, Luster 5 x 5 x 10 inches
Roberto Lugo (Born 1981) is a rocket in our ceramic sky. Even as a student his work was attracting attention with eager collectors ready to acquire his art. His practice is truth-telling, a mixture of social commentary, sometimes gentle and at other times forceful. As you can see this work, “Stunting: Pump (I)” he employs a hedonistic palette, rich in jewel colors and highlight of gold drawing with faux grandeur from the turn of the 19th century American and European decorative vessels. He sheds their polite but cold elegance and makes the forms loose, expressionistic and coarse. He states, “I am a potter, social activist, spoken word poet, and educator, roles are rooted in my childhood. Having had no formal music or art training, I often practiced table drumming, writing hip-hop lyrics, drew in my composition book, and marked every wall that I could. “Graffiti” was a way to get my name into the community, to attain a local fame.” Today his graffiti “defaces social inequality” as he puts it, with the pot as his canvas. He is represented by Wexler Gallery, Philadelphia.
