.52 caliber, 2 3/4" round iron barrel with flat top. The flat top is engraved in cursive F. Schuman, and has a German silver straight blade front sight. The rear facing lock is unmarked, with an engraved border. The derringer features German silver furniture, including a screw plate on the underside of the stock, a trigger guard with a three pointed finial, a shield form thumbrest, a sideplate and a teardrop form buttplate. The stock has a carved and tapered forend and a checkered bird's head profile. According to the previous owner, this is the only known example of a Schumann derringer in existence.
The barrel and lock have a dark and aged plum patina. The stock has some nicks and dings, along with an old repaired crack on the left side, forward of the sideplate. The bore and action are good.
