.38-55 caliber, 28" Rigby barrel, S/N 9174 . With matching numbers throughout. The barrel has the distinct relief raised Rigby ribs, with an engraved pattern at the muzzle. The left flat of the frame is marked with the Marlin name and address, and Ballard's patent. Both sides of the frame, as well as the top flats, feature fancy scroll engravings surrounded by a heart pattern border. The left side also features an engraved buck in a circle, with the right siide featuring an engraved bear in a circle. With a spirit level and windgauge front sight and a tang mounted midrange Vernier peep sight. The forearm features deluxe wood and checkering, with a tapered horn forend. The pistol grip buttstock features deluxe wood and checkering and an ebony wedge. This 6 1/2 Rigby is unique because the buttstock lacks a cheekpiece and Swiss buttplate, and instead has a checkered Ballard shotgun style buttplate. From the David D. Sobel Single Shot Rifle Collection.
The barrel is in very good condition, with only one a few scuff marks. The frame has a mostly flat grey patina, with some dull plum spotting areas. The wood has a minuscule age crack on the left side where the it meets the frame, otherwise all else is in excellent condition. The bore and the action are excellent.
