Sixth plate half-length studio portrait ambrotype. N.p., circa 1861-1865. Separated full leatherette case.
Imposing view of a Union private brandishing an intimidatingly large M1832 Foot Artillery sword across his chest. In this close-up seated portrait, the young Yankee stares intently into the photographer’s lens.
The soldier's sword features a wide, double-edged steel blade forged in the “Gladius” style, deliberately recalling the weapons of ancient Roman armies. Its role as a true fighting sword, however, is less certain. Period accounts suggest the imposing blade was often used for more mundane tasks such as clearing brush or digging. Whatever its practical use, the subject made his point by displaying a weapon nearly as broad as himself.
