This exceptional pair of large Peruvian traditional folk art dolls presents an elaborate celebration of Peru's rich textile traditions, regional dress, and colorful artisan craftsmanship.
Standing approximately 21 5/8 inches (55 cm) high each, the two figures are individually dressed in highly detailed traditional-style costumes incorporating handwoven textile elements, embroidery, woven bands, decorative trims, and richly colored fabrics.
The male figure wears an elaborate ceremonial-style ensemble distinguished by a dramatic feathered headdress, colorful woven details, fringed elements, a small set of panpipes, and a suspended drum. The female figure is dressed in an especially elaborate layered costume with a richly ornamented floral headdress, multicolored woven mantle, decorated bodice, broad textile belt, and an extensively embellished skirt.
Particularly striking is the extraordinary variety of Peruvian textile patterns, vivid colors, floral ornamentation, geometric designs, and hand-worked decorative elements incorporated throughout the pair. Together, the figures form a visually impressive representation of the diversity and richness associated with traditional Peruvian dress and textile craftsmanship.
Traditional and contemporary Peruvian artisans have long created dolls dressed in regional costumes as a means of representing the country's distinctive clothing, dances, celebrations, and textile traditions.
