This exceptional Pair of Shiwilu Hand-Carved Wood Stools is an original creation by renowned Amazonian artist Reyter Mozombite Maca of Jeberos, Alto Amazonas, Loreto, Peru. Sculpted entirely by hand, each stool has been carved from a single solid piece of tornillo wood, preserving the natural grain, tonal variations, knots, and organic character of the timber.
The two stools present distinct sculptural forms. The larger, lighter-toned example rises on elongated supports beneath a substantial rounded seat, while the smaller, darker stool develops a more compact architectural silhouette with a broad curved opening. Together they form a striking pair in which functionality, sculpture, and the natural character of Amazonian wood become inseparable.
These works emerge from the artistic traditions of the Shiwilu people of Jeberos, Loreto, whose material culture includes an important tradition of wood carving and the sustainable use of forest resources. Rather than being assembled from separate components, each stool is carved directly from a single section of timber, requiring careful control of proportion, balance, structural strength, and the natural direction of the wood grain.
The restrained design gives the works a remarkably contemporary presence while remaining rooted in ancestral Amazonian knowledge. Their sculptural silhouettes, substantial weight, visible grain, and individual natural irregularities ensure that each stool is unique and cannot be precisely replicated.
Works by Reyter Mozombite Maca have previously been presented through auctions organized by the Museo de Arte de Lima (MALI), including pairs of his hand-carved stools.
ARTIST
Reyter Miguel Mozombite Maca was born in Jeberos, Alto Amazonas, Loreto, Peru, in 1974. An artist and agriculturalist belonging to the Shiwilu cultural tradition, his work reflects ancestral knowledge of Amazonian wood carving and a close relationship with the forest and its natural resources.
His sculptural stools combine utilitarian function with highly refined organic forms, allowing the grain, mass, coloration, and natural characteristics of the wood itself to become fundamental elements of the finished work.

Condition
Excellent overall condition. Both stools remain structurally sound and retain their natural wood surfaces, grain, tonal variations, knots, and organic characteristics. Minor surface marks, natural fissures, irregularities, and variations in coloration are consistent with solid hand-carved timber and the individual character of each unique piece.
