Alfredo Lopez Morales is one of the most recognized living continuators of Ayacucho's distinguished artistic heritage. Grandson and direct disciple of the legendary Joaquin Lopez Antay, one of the most illustrious figures in twentieth-century Peruvian art, he has dedicated his career to preserving this celebrated family legacy while developing original sculptures, retablos, crosses, masks, canvases, and murals. In 2022, he received the prestigious Joaquin Lopez Antay Medal in recognition of his artistic trajectory and contribution to the continuity of Peru's traditional arts.
This exceptional original cedar sculpture portrays the Virgin of the Immaculate Conception standing in a graceful devotional pose, with her hands gently crossed over her chest and her gaze directed slightly to one side. Her serene expression, delicately modeled features, and flowing brown hair give the figure a quiet sense of tenderness and spiritual presence.
The Virgin wears an ivory gown enriched with finely rendered golden ornamentation and a magnificent deep-blue mantle that falls in broad sculptural folds around her body. The intense blue, luminous ivory, gold accents, and warm flesh tones create a refined chromatic harmony while emphasizing the elegant movement of the drapery.
At her feet, a gilded crescent moon and sculpted cherubic faces identify the figure with the traditional iconography of the Immaculate Conception. The vivid red rectangular base provides a powerful visual contrast and gives the sculpture a commanding presence suitable for display from multiple angles.
Entirely carved and finished by hand from cedar, the work reveals the artist's mastery of religious imagery and his ability to unite devotional symbolism with expressive sculptural modeling. ARTIST
Alfredo Lopez Morales was born in Ayacucho, Peru, in 1958. He is the son of Mardonio Lopez Quispe and grandson of Joaquin Lopez Antay, from whom he inherited and learned the family's celebrated artistic tradition. Today, he is recognized as one of its most prominent living continuators, preserving its devotional and narrative identity while expanding it through original sculptures and contemporary compositions.
