CALIFORNIA GOLD RUSH LITHOGRAPHED REBUS LETTER, on thin wove paper, written in script and with phonic illustrations by J. Goldsborough Bruff (1804-1889), City of Washington (DC), August, 1856. Being the issue with Bruff's name misspelled "Godsborough". Modern frame and mat. Circa 1856. Double sheet 10 3/8" x 17 1/2" sight. Catalogue Note: The letter describes Bruff's time in California during the gold rush of 1849. Bruff and a group of investors founded the Washington (DC) and California Mining Co. prompting his travels to the region. He later wrote "The Gold Seekers Guide to California" but was unable to find a publisher. Only a few copies of this lithographed letter have been recorded.
