Part of the Tipple series (favorite beverages) – Recycled bird with outer covering of wine labels (Indaba Chenin Blanc 2018, La Grange Tiphaine Nouveau Nez 2016, Calabretta Terre Sicilane Rosato 2018) and used metallic wrapping tissue; bird body made from reclaimed materials (cardboard, postcards, packing newsprint); legs made from reclaimed wire from deconstructed sculpture.
Wine labels can have wonderful colors and lovely fonts, but the challenge is to get them off the bottle (either by soaking or by heating) and then to remove the adhesive so they lay flat on each other when applied to a sculptural surface. This requires dampening and rubbing the adhesive backing off carefully to avoid ripping. Some attempts are more successful than others. Who knew wine labels use so many different weights and types of paper, printing and adhesives! It has been an adventure collecting labels for the Tipple series. I have just begun to use my stash. I welcome commissions using labels from your favorite bottles - just be forewarned of the risk that they might not all survive to make in on a bird!
