Kate Salas's stoneware clay vessels dissolve distinctions. At once functional and sculptural, both traditional and modern, Three Spheres were constructed simultaneously with the intention of being displayed as a group. Salas made the vessels using the ancient technique of coiling; overlapping layers of coiled clay enables the maker to achieve large-scale spheres. The surface treatment is minimal, eschewing glaze and texturing, in order to highlight the color of the clay and coil construction. Three Spheres is a nod to traditional historical ceramics while the minimalist, unadorned surface treatment pushes the pieces toward a contemporary aesthetic.
