Rare System Grain Tester Shagreen Shaft Cane, 19th Century, tripod and four compartments, ending in a brass ferrule. A 19th-century systems cane featuring a grain-measuring mechanism and a shagreen (sharkskin or ray skin) shaft is a highly specialized agricultural antique. These walking sticks were designed as portable scientific instruments for grain merchants and farmers to evaluate the quality and density of crops in the field
