For decades, Ewald has collaborated in art projects with children, families, women, and teachers in Colombia, India, South Africa, Saudi Arabia, and Mexico. Her work blurs the distinction between photographer and subject. She is the recipient of a MacArthur Fellowship, grants from the National Endowment for the Arts, The Andy Warhol Foundation, and the Fulbright Commission.
She has had several solo exhibitions, including the International Center of Photography in New York, the Center for Creative Photography in Tucson, and the Fotomuseum in Wintherthur, Switzerland. She has published ten books and also presently teaches at Amherst College.
