Alison Philpotts specializes in creating large-scale landscape paintings using acrylic paint, drawing her primary inspiration from the stunning prairie and mountain scenery of southern Alberta and British Columbia. Credit for her foundational techniques in colour mixing, composition, and flow goes to her father, though her early years were also shaped by emulating Canadian landscape greats like Tom Thomson and A.Y. Jackson, alongside European impressionists such as Van Gogh, Cézanne, and Monet. Over time, Philpotts developed a unique, non-representational approach that prioritizes strong colours to evoke specific moods and feelings rather than strictly duplicating a physical location. Whether capturing sunlight filtering through leaves, the interplay of forest shadows, or a vast expanse of sky and mountains, she strives to establish a deep personal connection between the viewer and the canvas. Ultimately, her goal is to transport the viewer into the natural world, deeming a painting successful when it captures the majesty and tranquility of nature and evokes the viewer's own memories of similar landscapes—an impactful style that has earned her a place in private collections throughout Canada and the United States.
