- Lot Description
Antique 1920s American Vega Cylinder-Backed Mandolin with Case. Strung for 4 pegs (up to 6 available), spruce top, mahogany back & sides, steeply arched back, engraved Vega star on peghead, intact label visible inside. Original case has leather exterior and felt interior, comes with various papers and tools.
Condition: Commensurate with age. One missing peg.
Case Size: 38 x 15 x 5 in.
The Vega Company, founded in Boston in 1881 by Julius and Carl Nelson, became known for guitars, mandolins, and especially banjos after acquiring A.C. Fairbanks in 1904. Under designer David L. Day, Vega introduced innovative banjos like the Tu-ba-Phone and later expanded into horns and archtop jazz guitars. Quality declined after the 1940s, and C.F. Martin bought the brand in the 1970s before production ceased in the early 1980s. Since 1989, the Deering Banjo Company has owned the Vega name, producing banjos inspired by the 1960s folk revival.
