Henry Gilpin (1922-2011) lived a colorful and varied life, serving in WWII, and subsequently the Air Force Reserves, before finding his way to Monterey, CA,”the epicenter of West Coast photography. While Gilpin's interest in photography sparked at an early age, his commitment to the medium began in 1959, when he attended an Ansel Adams workshop in Yosemite. Throughout the subsequent decade, Gilpin would make notable images that sealed his reputation,”spurring him to teach at local universities, along with Ansel Adams' Yosemite workshops from 1967-73. Gilpin continued to photograph, teach, and serve the Monterey County Sheriff for decades thereafter, making him an integral member of the Monterey/Carmel community.
