  ARTIST: WILLIAM GARNETT TITLE: 'Salt, Death Valley, CA, 1954' MEDIUM: Silver Gelatin IMAGE SIZE: 15 7/8 x 19 7/8 in DESCRIPTION: This likely early silver gelatin exhibition print bears Garnett's early stamp signature, studio stamp, title and date mount verso. The original mount is trimmed to the edges of the image, which was Garnett's preferred presentation, and would have been floated in a frame for exhibition. The Gallery has located no other prints of this image. From the collection of Robert K. Byers. Acquired from the artist. William Garnett (1916-2006) was an aerial photographer who cultivated a passion for flying and photography after serving as a cameraman in WWII. Garnett photographed and flew simultaneously in his 1956 Cessna across California and abroad. Garnett attained notoriety early in his career, participating in 7 exhibitions at the MoMA, NY from 1955-67, with several more throughout the intervening decades. Garnett is known today not only as the pioneer of aerial photography, but also for his innovations in post-war abstraction.
