68"x 30", one-of-a-kind Joomchi paper painting/ 5 layered artwork. Each layer is all handmade and dyed and went through Joomchi process. *JOOMCHI is the unique Korean traditional way of making textured and painterly imagery handmade paper just by using water. The terminology originated from meaning, “making a Joomoney (Pouch in English)”. It creates strong, textural, and painterly surfaces. As time goes, the surface becomes more and more elegant like leather.
/ Since its texture, shadow, and movement are huge part of my artworks so instead of framing it which limits all these effects, I prefer hanging these works without frame. I treated surfaces to have a resistance of UVs and moisture and made its own hanging devices which comes with the artwork. I would recommend that these works are hung avoiding direct sunlight or too moisture area.
/ When the breeze come into and the person walks by, it gently moves like it is breathing in the space and with the person who owns it. I regard this interaction as 'dialog between and moving and stillness '. When the light hits the works, it will create layers of shadow which add depth and really accentuate the texture and the work itself.
/ Artist’s Statement: My interest in the art of ancient Korean Joomchi papermaking techniques have taken me on an exploration of the significance of women’s work in Korea to our relationship to each other across cultures and then to our connection with nature and ultimately to God.
The “Whisper-Romance” series began as a result of a conversation I had with my father in Korea after reading a disturbing article in the newspaper. It was a story about a son killing his parents. My father said, “This has happened because the essential relationship has been broken.”
My thoughts on this concept became the foundation for this series: the many facets of broken relationships.
We have “horse whisperers” and “dog whisperers” but I believe we need “human whisperers” to heal what has been broken in our essential relationship to ourselves, to nature and to God. It is important to be reminded of how important and valuable each of our lives are--regardless of where or how we were raised or what position we find ourselves in now---to enjoy living life to the fullest.
The holes, layers and free mounting of my work represent these conversations, the whispers and the breath between them.
