Made of Reclaimed Oak, mixed species
This vessel has not been turned on a lathe. It was built hollow, STACKED piece by piece, layer by layer, all the while controlling the wall thickness as well as the profile. The salvaged wood offcuts were sourced from a variety of local Brooklyn wood shops, as well as from deconstructed turn of the century mill and factory buildings from the Northeast. The wood’s natural coloring shows off tones ranging from light sand to mid and even dark brown, including old worm, bug, and nail holes. There is no stain involved. Once complete, the two independent shapes were connected and then the surface was gently sculpted smooth using a variety of hand held tools, resulting in a finely honed finish with slight undulations, similar to that of hand-built ceramics.
