Mosaic on panel. Dimensions: 64 × 90.5 cm. Signed in the lower right corner. The reverse bears a double stamp from Galleria Il Patio, Ravenna, as well as the signature of Giancarlo Francesco Bertaccini. A certificate of provenance on a color photograph, issued by G. Carlo Bertaccini and dated March 15, 2025, with a stamp in the lower center, is included. This is a posthumous, non-autograph work; the date of 1965 refers to the original design and not to the actual execution of the mosaic. The work derives from one of the most characteristic styles of the mature production of Afro Basaldella, a key figure in postwar Italian abstraction, whose exploration of the relationship between color, rhythm, and structure found a particularly fertile ground in mosaics, closely linked to the Ravenna tradition. The composition translates the artist's pictorial sensibility into the mosaic medium, articulating a vibrant surface of chromatic accents and abstract tensions that fully preserves the spirit of his inventions on paper, tapestry, and paint. The work was reproduced on the cover of the catalogue Maurizio Calvesi, Afro a Ravenna, opere su carta, grafica, arazzi, mosaici, exhibition catalogue, Ravenna, 1991, p. 165, and also in M. Zuliani, Afro Mosaici, Associazione Industriali della Provincia di Udine, within Afro a Ravenna: opere su carta, grafica, arazzi, mosaici, edited by M. Calvesi, RL Stamperia d'Arte, Ravenna, 1991, vol. 22, p. 166. It was also exhibited at MUSPAC, Museo Sperimentale d'Arte Contemporanea, L'Aquila, from August 27 to November 30, 1997, in the exhibition dedicated to Afro Basaldella, curated by G. Di Pietro and F. Bertaccini, with a catalogue introduction by Maurizio Calvesi. The work is accompanied by a copy of the catalogue in which it appears. Lot in international warehouse (within the EU).
