Oil on canvas. Dimensions: 100 × 74 cm. Framed. The work depicts Saint Jerome, one of the Latin Fathers of the Church, traditionally represented as a hermit and scholar of the Holy Scriptures. Translator of the Bible into Latin (Vulgate), the saint appears in a meditative pose, underscoring his role as a theologian, penitent, and model of the ascetic life. The iconography of Saint Jerome was especially common in Baroque painting, as it allowed for the development of compositions of strong spiritual and dramatic intensity. The painting is attributed to the Genoese painter Giuseppe Assereto, one of the most prominent artists of the 17th-century Ligurian school. Trained in the artistic milieu of Genoa, Assereto developed a pictorial language deeply influenced by Caravaggesque naturalism, characterized by the use of contrasts of light and shadow and by a remarkable expressive power in the figures. His religious works typically focus on monumental and meditative figures, rendered with great psychological intensity and dramatic lighting that highlights the spiritual nature of the scene. The work is accompanied by an expert report from Professor Tiziana Zennaro, dated 2012, which supports the attribution to the artist. Lot in international warehouse (within the EU).
