Oil on canvas, relined. Dimensions: 71 x 54.5 cm. A handwritten certificate by Bernard Dorival, dated January 30, 1994, is included. In a carved and gilded frame. This portrait, dated 1660, depicts Hardouin de Beaumont de Péréfixe (1606–1671), tutor to Louis XIV, Bishop of Rodez, and later Archbishop of Paris. The subject is shown with his episcopal attributes and the cross associated with the Order of the Holy Spirit. The work belongs to the portraiture of Philippe de Champaigne, one of the leading French painters of the 17th century, renowned for his portraits of great formal restraint and strong psychological presence, characteristic of his mature pictorial style and his connection to the religious and intellectual circles of Port-Royal. The artist, trained in the Flemish tradition but fully integrated into the French painting of the Grand Siècle, developed a style marked by precise drawing, restrained use of color, and a remarkable ability to capture the dignity and character of his subjects.
