• Lot Description

  Oil on canvas. Dimensions 25 x 19 cm; framed 40 x 31 cm. A devotional composition of intense mystical content in which Saint Francis appears kneeling, with open arms and his face raised towards a burst of glory from which a beam of supernatural light descends. At his feet are a skull and a bone, elements of strong penitential significance that underscore the meditation on death and the renunciation of worldly things, while the brown habit and the austere surroundings reinforce the identification with Franciscan spirituality. The scene is resolved through a pronounced chiaroscuro, which focuses attention on the illuminated figure and the celestial diagonal that articulates the supernatural vision. The brushwork and format reflect a painting intended for private devotion, conceived for intimate contemplation, within the late Spanish Baroque tradition. The work is noteworthy for its expressive intensity, the clarity of its iconography, and its ability to condense an image of powerful religious and symbolic emotion into a small format. 25 x 19 cm.
