These agate earrings are so modern looking one would have thought they were designed today, not in 1880. Agate is a variety of quartz and takes many forms, and in this case, it is a particularly lovely form of banded, or striped carnelian agate, a red agate which in the Victorian era was mined in Scotland. Agate has been carved, cut and polished into seals, beads, brooches, and earrings since ancient times. It is a particularly hard stone with a Moh's level of 7 on the hardness scale. Agates do not easily scratch. This probably accounts for the excellent like new condition of these earrings. The earrings are approximately 2 3/4 inches in length and 1.5 inches at their widest.
