Circle of Henri Alphonse Laurent-Desrousseaux (French, 1862-1906), “Working at the Shore”, oil on canvas, signed lower left “Laurent”. French figural genre painting depicting three women in foreground standing near docked boat with wooden hull—one leaning against boat resting, another seated tending to fishing nets, and the last standing and holding sail fabric. Sandy beach marked with scattered rocks, two other peasant women standing in shallow pool of water near placid ocean at right under overcast sky. Framed approximately 32.5” x 43.25”. Unframed approximately 25.75” x 36.25”.
Examined under blacklight. Painting has been relined. Oxidation to stretcher commensurate with age. Minor craquelure to paint surface. Evidence of older varnish layer. Inpainting in repair of frame rubbing along left, top, and right edges. Inpainting to leftmost subject's face along cheekbone and in hair. Inpainting to dresses of two figures in right background and around their feet. 8.5" long repaired tear in sky above background figures. Other scattered and minor areas of inpainting to background landscape, not distracting. Paint layer stable. No other apparent losses, tears, abrasions, or punctures.
