Two extraordinary WWII documents headline our 2017 Arms and Militaria Auction. The first is the English version of the German surrender demand made at Bastogne in 1944 that prompted General Anthony McAuliffe's legendary response,  "NUTS!" The second is an original Potsdam Proclamation collected by Secret Service Agent Elmer R. Hipsley. This previously unknown copy has been discreetly stored within a map of Berlin since Mr. Hipsley's passing in 1968. Rounding out the sale is a Civil War era cane and a presentation grade sword belonging to Colonel Whitman. All lots in this auction are being offered unreserved. Select items will be available for preview at the Las Vegas Antique Arms Show January 20-22 and at our Sacramento gallery January 13th from 12 - 5 p.m.

The Collection of Dr. Martin Eidelberg: Saturday, January 21st at 10AM (EST), 95 lots

Rago’s is honored to present the collection of scholar and author Dr. Martin Eidelberg, featuring some of the finest examples of early 20th century American pottery we have ever offered including spectacular works by George Ohr, Grueby, Adelaide Robineau, University City, and Van Briggle. Rare works by Eva Zeisel, Marblehead, and William Hunt Diederich, as well as European ceramics by Gio Ponti, Pierre-Adrien Dalpayrat, Auguste Delaherche, James Vibert, and Edward Colonna.

David Rago, Partner + Co-Director 20th-21st C. Design Dept: “Dr. Eidelberg not only taught us about the history and importance of objects and their makers, he also explored the relationship those objects had with each other, with us, and with society as a whole, and how that all defined the Arts & Crafts as a reform movement.  Few besides him knew, in the early 1970s, the radical intention of a piece of Grueby pottery, or the paradigm-altering perspective offered by a “new” interior of natural materials, cleansing sunlight, and hand-made objects.  I am indebted to him for revealing a truth that is as relevant now as it was 45 years ago.”

Online Only Auctions at Pook & Pook are live auctions, not timed auctions. They run just like a regular salesroom auction with the lots being sold one at a time in lot number order. The only difference is that there are no bidders in the salesroom or on the phones. All bidding, both live and absentee, is taking place online through the Bidsquare site. You can leave absentee bids up until a few minutes before an item sells. You can also bid live when the item crosses the auction block. Once the item is live, outbid notices cease. When the bidding slows down, a five second countdown begins. If nobody clicks bid during that five second countdown, the clerk then clicks ‘sold’. If someone does click bid, the countdown clock resets itself to five seconds and the countdown begins again. For the Online Only Auctions, we sell approximately 150 lots per hour. If you have any additional questions about how our Online Only Auctions work, please call (610) 269-4040 or email info@pookandpook.com. The buyer’s premium for this auction is 25%.
