Outsider Art is the genre that has expanded to vaguely include all artists who do not come from the conventional art world and who often create art for themselves, working on the fringes of mainstream society. The niche self-taught genre continues to generate compelling art, reflecting the artist’s state of mind and the creator’s inspired visions. At Bidsquare Online auction, you will find Outsider art for sale of masterpieces by the genre’s leading artists as well as emerging talents with a dedicated following of dealers and collectors.

Outsider Art – A Brief History

Originally used as a synonym for 'Art Brut', the term "Outsider Art" was introduced by the art critic Roger Cardinal in 1972. As a label for works that were outside mainstream artistic norms, it was developed by Jean Dubuffet during the 1940s. Cardinal's definition of Art Brut has evolved to encompass a broader range of artists with shared raw creativity as the core of their work. Artists from diverse backgrounds, cultures, and ages make up this group. The number of artists influenced by Art Brut has grown over time. Their works have been more critical of an "elite" art that increasingly fails to capture human experience accurately.

Although they fall under the same category of artists all around the world, Outside artists do not have to come under the scrutiny of the rules and regulations of normal artistry. These art pieces are generally created by untrained artists who on a general notion, are not known to the conventional artwork. In contrast, they created art from circumstances or for themselves. Culturally included and socially marginalized artists were prime producers of such art. These people produced work out of misfortunate events and with no apparent desire for fortune or fame. Hundreds of exhibitions and auctions have been dedicated to this form of art in recent years, indicating a growing interest in Outsider art among collectors and curators alike. Considering Outsider art's democratic roots, the art form is universally appealing. As well as transcending genres, the work also reflects the artist's mindset as well as the era in which it was created.
