Chinese, first half 20th century (possibly older). A pair of Rose Medallion decorated porcelain bottle vases with hidden calligraphic marks, the form with low bulbous body raised on ring foot, platform shoulder, tall incurvate neck, and flattened garlic mouth, the whole decorated with traditional shaped cartouches of hand painted enamels alternating between courtly figural scenes and landscape scenes with birds on flowering branches with prunus fruit, these cartouches reserved on a field of gilding with green foliate scrolls, butterflies, and pink peonies; under the enamels, the vases molded above shoulder and below rim with several repeated calligraphic marks including Guan, these marks not regarded in the enamel decoration. One vase marked to marquis form within one figural scene, roughly translated to "platform moon" or "ancient moon"; no further marks. Approximate height 17", diameter 8.75".
One vase fit with metal insert at top for conversion into lamp -however both lamps not drilled. Each vase with light wear to gilt and enamels commensurate with age and light handling. Under black light examination, each with some small areas of retouching, not particularly noticeable. No signs of cracks, chips or fractures. Each vase with scattered glazing imperfections. Each vase with wear and scattered flakes to foot commensurate with age and shelf use. No other signs of damage, loss or repair.
