Biography: After completing studies at the Academy of Fine Arts, Alf Wallander studied in Paris from 1885-89. In 1886, the same year that he performed in the light of the evening lamp, he also spent some time in the Swedish artist colony in Grez, a stay which, among other things, resulted in the gumma engraving in glasses, Grez (National Museum). The high level that his artistry had achieved at this time is also exemplified by the purchase of the oil painting Julottan that year by the Minneapolis Museum. In 1889 he got his oil painting A funny show of honor at the Salon and for the pastel Tiggargubbe he received an extra 1st prize at the World Exhibition. Above all, it was precisely the pastel that became Alf Wallander's medium. He was arguably Sweden's foremost pastel painter in the late 1800s and his most significant work belongs to the now-current I The Evening Lamp from 1886. Prior to this work, the thoughts go unnoticed to Hanna Pauli's famous monumental Friends of 1900-07 (National Museum). The fact that Alf Wallander's painting was completed 14 years before Hanna Pauli begins his work is undeniably interesting. The idea is that Hanna Pauli must have seen Alf Wallander's painting at some point and that it came to be one of the sources of inspiration for Friends several years later.
