He began his art education at the Art Students League in New York, where he studied under Robert Blum, Oliver Reid, Karl Volk, and John Twachtmann. From the League, he went to Paris in 1899 to the Academy Julian and the Delacluse Academy. He returned to New York and had a studio for 54 years in New York at 51 W. 10th Street where William Merritt Chase, Winslow Homer, and John La Farge also worked. He taught at the Berkshire Summer School of Art, the Montclair Museum School, the old Whitney Museum School, the Newark School of Fine and Industrial Arts, and the Pratt Institute.
