After the tragic assassination of President
John F. Kennedy on November 22, 1963,
newly installed President Lyndon Johnson
quickly submitted the necessary bill to
Congress to authorize a re-design of the
half-dollar to honor the fallen President.
The Kennedy half-dollar designs were
prepared by Chief Engraver Gilroy
Roberts (obverse) and his protégé,
Frank Gasparro (reverse). During the
design process, Mrs. Jacqueline Kennedy
and Attorney General Robert F.

2015 ENHANCED UNCIRCULATED NATIVE AMERICAN $1 COIN
The 2015 Native American $1 Coin commemorates the contributions of the Kahnawake
Mohawk and Akwesasne Mohawk communities to "high iron" construction work and the
building of New York City skyscrapers. The reverse design depicts a Mohawk ironworker
reaching for an I-beam that is swinging into position, rivets on the left and right side of the
border, and a high elevation view of the city skyline in the background. The design includes
the required inscriptions "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA" and "$1," with the additional
inscription "MOHAWK IRONWORKERS."
