Alexandre Boudan (around 1600 - around 1671 ibid.): Depiction of the saint Matthias the Apostle with hatchet, 17th century, Copper engraving
Technique: Copper engraving on Paper
Inscription: Signed by the artist at the bottom of the printing plate.
The sheet comes from a series with depictions of the apostles of Jesus Christ by Boudan, created in the mid-17th century as a votive or devotional picture.

Description: Full-length depiction of St. Matthias in antique costume standing on a pedestal. In his hands he holds the attribute of his martyrdom, an axe. In the background is a scenic representation of the apostle's martyrdom as well as a scene from the saint's life and meeting with Jesus of Nazareth.
