Richard Earlom (1743 London - 1822 ibid.) after Anthonis van Dyck (1599 Antwerp - 1641 London): Portrait of the English politician Thomas Chaloner (1595 1661), 1778, Mezzotint
Technique: Mezzotint on Paper
Inscription: Dated and signed below the image in the printing plate with "Vandyck pinxit", "J. Boydell Excudet", "R Earlom sculps".

Description: Thomas Chaloner was an English politician and commissioner in the trial of Charles I. He signed his death warrant. The portrait of Sir Thomas Chaloner is one of Van Dyck's last works. It was painted in the late 1630s and may be one of his best paintings. The artist depicts the ageing face of Chaloner. His facial features, facial expressions and posture convey the active and spirited character of this man. He wears an elegant silk coat with a lace collar and a sword at his hip.

Lower left corner of the sheet slightly bumped. Remains of an old mounting at the upper margin of the back. The print appears velvety and fresh.Condition
