Description: QUINTUS CURTIUS [RUFUS] RUFI HISTORIARUM MAGNI ALEXANDRI MACEDONIS Libri octo [ALEXANDER THE GREAT]. Francisco Modio, ed. Quintus Curtius. Maternum Cholinum, Cologne, 1579. [14], 343, (16), 181 (2) pages. Initials in woodcut. Overlapping 8vo vellum. Historiae Alexandri Magni, or "Histories of Alexander the Great," is the only known and surviving work written by Quintus Curtius Rufus, a Roman historian who lived most likely in the first century. It measures 4 1/8 by 6 1/2", has a text in Latin, a bookplate of W.G. van der Tak on the upper pastedown, is vellum soiled, and has a missing upper end, displaying medieval maculature. A significant portion is absent from "All the Books That Survive of the Histories of Alexander the Great of Macedon." There is nothing certain known about him other than his name being on the manuscripts. For this reason alone, philologists have concluded that he had a different historical identity, to which the passage of time has severed the connection. There are a few theories. Different authors consider them with differing degrees of reliability. Quintus Curtius Rufus, the historian, maintains his anonymity in the meantime.
