Description: Commentaries frequently discuss memories of the Dutch streets, trade, monuments, and historical events. A chronicle of Dutch history from 1369 to 1608, written by historian Emanuel van Meteren (1535-1612), in small folio format measuring 8 by 13". It has an engraved title, portrait, and numerous small portraits in text. The vellum is bound without ties, and there is some soiling and minor spots. An Meteren's detailed account of the Eighty Years' War (1568-1648), also called the Spanish-Dutch War (1568-1648), up until 1608—a conflict he personally witnessed—makes him especially valuable. Van Meteren's account was based not only on his thorough study but also on his personal experiences and information from helpful contacts that he shared with statesmen. The chronicle also has amazing details on the era's ships and trade, especially the expeditions to the North and East Indies. Dutch text from an old library
