Eikon Basilike translates to "king's portrait." Historically, Charles I has been recognized as the author; however, since John Gauden, the Bishop of Worcester, became apparent as a likely ghostwriter in the 1690s, there has been some debate over this. The King and Gauden are now believed to have worked together on it. The book summarizes the history of the civil wars, defending the King's policies from the Long Parliament's call in 1640 to Charles's imprisonment at Carisbrooke Castle in 1647. Part political narrative, part spiritual autobiography, it portrays Charles as the Church's and Stat's protector.
