Text in French edited by Protestant theologian John LeClerc, who held the position of Philosophy and Hebrew Professor at the College of the Arminians in Amsterdam. Leclerc published three periodicals during his tenure as an academic and editor: the Bibliotheque Ancienne et Moderne, the Bibliotheque Choisie, and the Bibliotheque Universelle et Historique. LeClerc was appointed a professor at the College of the Arminians in 1683 after leaving his birthplace of Geneva, where he had been living by 1683. In the early years of the Age of Reason, he started the journal's publication to promote intellectual and scholarly communication. In addition to book reviews, LeClerc's three Bibliotheques featured writings by some of the era's most illustrious scholars, John Locke being among them.
