London, 1693–1684, 8vo: 4.5 by 7" later mottled calf adorned in gilt, with reinforced ointments, a detached back cover, and an otherwise sound interior text. Samuel Butler (1613–1680) wrote the ferocious satirical poem Hudibras in a mock-heroic style. It was published in three parts in 1663, 1664, and 1678. The action takes place in the final years of the Interregnum, roughly in 1658–1660, just before Charles II was crowned king again in May 1660. The narrative concludes with a clever and thorough proclamation that women are superior to males. It follows Hudibras, a knight and colonel in the Parliamentary army, as he is repeatedly vanquished, occasionally by the bravery and talent of women.
